Use Embase to find drug names, synonyms and CAS Registry Numbers

Scientific literature rarely discusses compounds by their brand names, making the knowledge of preferred terms, synonyms and CAS® Registry Number(s) important when attempting to cast a wide net for search results.

Start with Embase® (File 73).  All you have to do is EXPAND on a drug name in parentheses to find the preferred term.  Then EXPAND the preferred name.  SELECT the preferred term, the synonyms and the CAS Registry Number(s) — and you’re good to go to the peer-reviewed literature with confidence.

Once you have SELECTED the appropriate terms, ADD MEDLINE® (File 155), BIOSIS Previews® (File 5) and SciSearch®: A Cited Reference Science Database (File 34).  Want to make MEDLINE the default database in duplicate detection?  No problem:  simply SET FILES 155,73,5,34.

View search...In this example we searched for peer-reviewed literature for EXELON, a drug used to treat moderate dementia caused by Alzheimer’s disease.
