ProQuest Dialog at a Glance module:

Use ProQuest Dialog to Limit by Dates

Slide 1
This At a Glance module illustrates ways to limit your search by date in ProQuest Dialog.

Slide 2
The example shows you how to use the date slider to limit a search on radio frequency identification in healthcare and narrow your search even more to specific months in ProQuest Dialog.

Slide 3
A nice feature in ProQuest Dialog is the ability to use the date slider to narrow by date range, specific year or specific month. Begin in Basic Search in the Engineering & Technology subject group in the Ei Compendex® database. Type one or more terms in the search box at the top of the screen to search for the topic radio frequency identification as it pertains to healthcare. Then click the Search button.

Slide 4
When the results display, you can quickly scan the titles to see if you are on the right track.

Slide 5
Scroll down and under Narrow results by use the date histogram, to drag the date slider to a year or range of years to narrow retrieval. By hovering over a bar, you'll see the number of retrieved records published in a certain year. Slide the bar tabs to the years you want or click on a bar, such as the one for the current year and click Update.

Slide 6
Results are narrowed and ProQuest Dialog shows the number of records by month in the year you selected.

Slide 7
Now we’ll narrow to specific dates from 2011. Below the date slider, click the specific date link. From the drop-down box, you can enter the month, date, year; the month and year or just the year. Then click Update.

Slide 8
The results screen shows the new number of records, and the histogram shows the number of records in each of the months.

Slide 9
In Preferences in My Research, you can sent a standard date format for all your searches. Click Preferences at the top of the screen. From the drop-down box, select your preferred format for displaying dates throughout the ProQuest interface and click Save preferences.

Slide 10
You can access date limits from Basic, Advanced and Command Line Search. On results pages the new easy-to-use date slider lets you select a date range or a specific year or months by just dragging the date slider to the time period you want. Below the date slider you can enter a specific date limit. From Preferences you can set your preferred format for displaying dates. Be sure to visit the ProQuest Dialog Customer Information page to learn about the content and features of this new service.
