ProQuest Dialog Product Demonstration:

ProQuest Dialog Language and Translation Features

Slide 1
This short module on ProQuest Dialog™ demonstrates the language preference and on-the-spot translation features.  Learn how you can set a language preference and translate abstracts or text on the fly.  For example, ProQuest Dialog gives you the ability immediately to translate an article retrieved in English to French.

Slide 2
There are several ways you can change the language of the ProQuest Dialog service on your account.  At the top right of each screen links appear for Preferences, English and Help.  Click Preferences if you wish to change a preference setting, such as language.

Slide 3
What language do you wish to use in ProQuest Dialog?  You can let the browser decide if you want ProQuest Dialog to detect where you are accessing the Internet from, and change the interface language accordingly.  You can use the drop-down menu and pick the language of your choice.

Other preferences you can set on this page include date display, number of results per page, sort options, such as by relevance or by publication dates, default citation style and email format.  Be sure to Save preferences.

Slide 4
Another way to change language is to click on the default language English at the top of the page.

Slide 5
Using the Preview feature you can see this is an article in English. In ProQuest Dialog you can quickly produce a machine-readable French translation of this abstract.  All you need to do is click the record's title to see the full record.

Slide 6
On the full record display page a link to Translate appears above the abstract or text. Click the link and choose the language from which to translate and the language to which to translate. Use the drop-down menu to choose English, the language of the abstract, and pick French as the destination language.

Slide 7
The full record appears with a machine-readable French translation of the abstract.  Make note of the disclaimer above the abstract, which explains that this is an on-the-fly translation for your convenience, and it is not meant to replace human translation.

You can copy/paste the translation into a word-processing software or you can print it from your browser using the File>Print feature.

Note:  You can only export, cite, email, print or save as file in its original language.

Slide 8
This screenshot shows a French translation copied from the record page and pasted into Microsoft® Word.

Slide 9
You can set a language preference by clicking Preferences or English on the top right of the screen.

On the Preferences screen language options include letting the browser set the language or choosing from a number of languages using a drop-down menu.

If you need a quick translation of an abstract or text, click the record's title and choose Translate. Then choose the source and destination languages using the drop-down menus for "From" and "To".

Visit the Training tab on the ProQuest Dialog Customer Information page for more search aids and training options.
