Today, information professionals and the professionals they serve in marketing, business development, executive management, and competitive intelligence, to name a few, search multiple sources and services for premium news and open Web content, which leads to decreased productivity and increases the likelihood of missing key information. This session provides an Overview of the new Dialog tool—NewsRoom Plus—which provides access to premium news and open Web content all in one search.
Slide 2
NewsRoom Plus, Dialog's new news product, lets users take advantage of global business and news sources in NewsRoom and the precision of searching Dialog, combined with the ability to search 35 million hours of video and 20 billion Web documents all in the same search. Designed for professional searchers and those who only "google," Dialog NewsRoom Plus makes it easy to get exactly the results you want.
Slide 3
NewsRoom Plus offers two versions: a 120-day archive for the current awareness user and coverage from 2000 forward for users who require a deeper archive. NewsRoom Plus has a number of features that make searching for news worldwide easier and less time-consuming. Here are a few of them.
Slide 4
To begin in NewsRoom Plus, go to the URL you were supplied at sign-up. At the top of the screen that displays are links to information about Dialog, press releases, support tips and contact information. Enter your Dialog User ID and password and click the Login button to get started. A separate ID and password are not needed. If you want to keep track of the charges associated with the search, just enter the subaccount to track the search.
Slide 5
You will immediately be taken to the Easy Search screen. We'll take a look at Easy Search first. The Easy search form looks similar to consumer Web search products. Enter your search terms in the Search box, narrow the search by publication date from the drop-down box, if desired, and check the boxes for the kind of content you want—news, video or Web results. Then click the Search button. At any time you can go to Advanced Search by clicking the link at the top left of the page.
Slide 6
A title list displays including all results from your search. Notice at the top of the screen are three tabs: News, Video and Web, listing the number of records retrieved in each. The title list is presented in an easy-to-read format that includes title, author, source, date of publication and brief text about the content of the article. Below the text of each article four formats are listed. Click the one for your results: HTML, PDF, Word and XML.
Slide 7
For more precise searching, you can use Advanced Search, which gives you the ability to narrow your searches to specific content. First, enter your search strategy as you did in Easy Search.
Slide 8
Two panes below the search boxes let you narrow your search further. To refine your search, use the "More Search Options" collapsible pane. You can search specific indexes by entering your search terms in the Title, Lead Paragraph, Author, or Company boxes. Your search is then conducted only in those parts of the records. You can also "Remove Duplicates" as needed from results. You can check availability of content in over 10 languages, or narrow further to an Industry, a Subject, or a Geographic Location by selecting from the multiple drop-down lists.
Slide 9
Below More Search Options in Advanced Search, a Source collapsible pane lets you narrow your search to one or more publications. You can search by publication title, by country, region or U.S. state and/or description. You can also browse by title by clicking the appropriate alphabetical or numerical listing.

Results display in the format you selected. The previous screen showed results in HTML format. Here are examples of records in PDF, Word and XML formats. The best method to view results is to either "Print" your results or use a format like "Word or PDF" and save the records to your hard drive. You can then attach your results using any email client. Use the XML output when you want to upload content into your own repository.
Slide 12
Once a headline has been selected in the summary section of the document, Dialog NewsRoom Plus offers you the ability to cross-search links in your choice of content. Mouse-over any company, source, or industry link as available. A small pop-up window appears to the right of the link, and you can search the link in news, video, Web, or all results as shown.
Slide 13
One special feature is the ability to set up Dialog Alerts so you can receive regular updates on a subject without having to continually search for it. When you have created a search in NewsRoom Plus, just click the Create an Alert link to set up the Alert. Complete the Alert form and save the Alert. Your results will display in a linkable Table of Contents on the day and time you have selected.
Slide 14
You can also save your search strategies so that you can reuse them at any time. Complete the search, click the Search Save button, give the strategy a name and click the Save button. To see a list of your saved searches, click the My Saved Searches link on the toolbar. You can run, edit or delete a saved search at any time. Dialog NewsRoom Plus also allows end users to save searches containing Web, video and news or any combination of these content sets which they desire.
Slide 15
As mentioned, you can conduct your search in NewsRoom, video or the Web to retrieve your results. The audio in the video collection is searched as text, so you can find video clips based on what is said in them. Click the Video tab to see your video results in a thumbnail title list. Click the thumbnail picture to run the video.
Slide 16
Click the Web tab to see the Web results from your search. Clicking the thumbnail next to the title will take you to the Web site.
Slide 17
Despite that NewsRoom Plus is easy to use, it also has a complete listing of help screens that are organized by topic. Helps can be searched by contents, index, or search terms.
