Do you have an ongoing project you need to update from time to time? Develop a search strategy that works and then store it on ProQuest Dialog. This At a Glance module shows you how to create and save search strategies and illustrates how easy it is to execute them and from time to time edit and update them.
Why store saved searches? You may have taken a long time and effort in getting a search strategy just right. Save it and use it again and again. You work hard at brainstorming keywords and synonyms. By storing a good strategy you don't have to reinvent the wheel the next time a similar project comes up. ProQuest Dialog customers store searches for a number of reasons including keeping tabs on competitors, maintaining regulatory reporting on launched drugs, monitoring emerging technologies and inventions and staying on top of what the trade publications and news organizations write about their own companies.
You can save searches from any of the search forms in ProQuest Dialog. This module shows how to build iterative sets, save the strategy, edit and execute it. For this reason we're going to use Command Line Searching.
A colleague has asked you to do some research on a company called InterDigital®. She heard that it was a prime company in the wireless and mobile arena because of its vast patent collection. She wants you to keep track of events regarding this company. Choose the business file Gale Group PROMT®. Because you want articles that specifically focus on InterDigital qualify your search to the title OR the company name fields. In Command Line Search, click Preview record counts to run the search and stay in Command Line Search and wait for your next search statement.
After the search for InterDigital runs, clear the form and enter your next search statement. In this case, it's the word patent. ProQuest Dialog will search for both the singular and plural forms. Click Preview record counts and let the search run.
The number of records retrieved in Set 2 is listed under recent sets with the results from Set 1. Clear the form and enter the next concept to create Set 3. This set contains ORed terms having to do with 3g or 4g or wireless within four words of either broadband or bandwidth in either order or mobile within three words of device in exact order. Since you are searching for synonyms or ORed terms, put parentheses around the statement. Click Preview record counts.
The number of records retrieved in Set 3 is listed under recent sets with the results from Sets 1 and 2. Clear the form and enter the next concept to create Set 4. This set combines the first three sets created. Click Search & go to results as this is the last set planned.
The search runs and you can view your results, browsing titles to see if you are on the right track. You may want to tweak the search if the records shown don't answer your questions. In this case, you are happy with the way the search went and you are ready to select records to view, print or email to your patron. See the At a Glance module on Post-Processing for details on how that works. For this session, assume you have finished that work and you realize that your patron will most likely call upon you again for updates on InterDigital. Save the strategy so you won't have to try to remember how you got these answers next time. Click Save search.
You are taken to My Research and the Searches Tab to save your search. Add a name for your search. Decide if you want to include just the final search statement or all the sets you have created so far. Click Save. If you are a transactional customer, you will see the estimated monthly price to save your search. Click Continue. You will see a message that your search has been saved.
Your saved search appears in your list of saved searches. You can edit its name, edit the search strategy, delete it, create an Alert or create an RSS feed. The saved search interdigital patents wireless1 shows the individual sets as well as the final search statement because Show was clicked next to "Search strategy contains multiple sets." The default is that the sets are hidden and all you need to do to see them is to click Show details. You can add notes here if you wish.
Let's say you decide you want to edit the search strategy. You decide you would like to OR in the word "phone" at the end of Set 3 and follow through with that same addition in the final set, 4. Click Edit search strategy below the Notes and Saved date.
It's so easy to edit, add or delete search terms. You can add a set by pressing <Enter> to start a new line. Remember that if you add a whole set you must make adjustments in the final statement. Click Learn more for details. In this case, you added the word phone to sets 3 and 4 so you're searching for network or broadband concepts or mobile within three words of device OR phone, nesting the ORed terms within parentheses. Press Save when you are ready. Note that you have the option to run the search. If you want to run the edited search before you save it, click Run.
The revised set you ran contains 69 records. Click Save. Pricing information displays for transactional customers indicating the cost of this saved monthly search. Press Continue to see that your search strategy has been saved.
Some time later you find you want to update data. Go into My Research and click the tab for Searches. Click the hyperlinked search strategy of the saved search you wish to execute.
At this later date, if you go directly to My Research after login to execute the search, you will get a prompt to choose database(s). In this case click Use original databases.
Results appear. From the popup box, select to search for content based on when it was last updated. Here in the last 30 days.
Now you have narrowed results to just one item you hadn't seen since the last time you executed the search. Select the item if you want to email, print, cite, export or save as file.
In conclusion, when you work out a good search strategy for ongoing research, save it. Click Save search. Give the strategy a name. If you created several sets choose to keep the sets and the final statement. Click Show to see the sets. You can add notes to describe the search or to remind you why you saved the search. You can manage, edit and execute your saved searches in My Research in the Searches tab. The object of saved searches is the ability to execute them again in relevant time periods. Use "Narrow results by" features on the Results page to qualify returns according to your needs.
