The application deadline is March 31, and the winner will be announced in June at the Special Libraries Association Annual Conference in Philadelphia. Information professionals and university professors on The Dialog Corporation's Library and Information Science Teaching Advisory Board will select the winner after reviewing academic achievement, faculty recommendations, interest in electronic information services, and proficiency using The Dialog Corporation's online services and products. The Dialog Corporation created the Library and Information Science Teaching Advisory Board to serve as a resource to LIS programs everywhere. The mandate of the board is to develop strategies to prepare the next generation of information professionals for successful and exciting careers in the field. The scholarship is named after Dr. Roger K. Summit. At the Lockheed Corporation during the 1960's, Dr. Summit was the designer and project manager for DIALOG which was then launched as the world's first commercially available online information retrieval system in 1972. Dr. Summit continued in various executive capacities, first within Lockheed and later as President and Chief Executive Officer of Dialog Information Services Inc., until his retirement in 1992. Five years later, Dr. Summit renewed his relationship with Dialog by being appointed Chairman Emeritus of The Dialog Corporation in December 1997. Commenting on today's announcement, Patrick Sommers, Dialog's Chief Operating Officer, said: "Roger has always been an enthusiastic supporter for library and information science education. We're proud to honor his contributions with this scholarship to recognize outstanding students in the field."
