Summit Scholarship Winner Cary, N.C., USA, June 11, 2001 Dialog, a leading provider of online-based information services and a subsidiary of The Thomson Corporation (TSE:TOC), today awarded the 2001 Roger K. Summit Scholarship to Shelagh K. Genuis from the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alberta, Canada. The $5,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate student in an accredited library or information science program. The winner is selected based on academic achievement, interest in electronic information services, proficiency using Dialog's online services and products, and faculty recommendations. The review board includes Carol Tenopir, professor at the School of Library and Information Science, University of Tennessee; and Anne Ellis, director of librarian relations at West Group; as well as Dialog staff. Genuis' interest in a MLIS degree began while working as an independent researcher and writer, managing and using vast amounts of information. The mother of five children, who maintains a 4.0 GPA, Genuis' experience includes electronic bibliographic instruction, research assistantship in electronic searching, and a demonstrated knowledge of Dialog searching. She is a member of the Canadian Library Association, CASLIS Division, and has professional experience as an occupational therapist. She plans to pursue a career in the medical arena as an information professional. "Receiving this prestigious award is a tremendous honor both for me and for the professors who have guided me in my study of electronic information," commented Genuis. "Earning a masters in library and information studies will ultimately allow me to do what I already love to seek and utilize information in order to increase knowledge." "Our review board had a difficult choice from a number of highly qualified applicants," said Libby Trudell, senior vice president of information professional market development. "We all felt that our winner demonstrated both academic excellence and a genuine enthusiasm for gathering and communicating vital information through online research." The scholarship is named for Dr. Roger K. Summit, founder of Dialog. It is part of Dialog's overall commitment to the ongoing development of information professionals that also includes sponsorship of the Special Libraries Association Knowledge Champions Institute and other SLA professional development programs. - Ends - About Dialog Headquartered in Cary, N.C., USA, with direct operations in 30 countries, Dialog products are used by more than 20,000 corporate customers in over 100 countries.
