United Technologies Signs Exclusive Agreement with Legal, Business Information Providers
Thomson businesses Dialog and West Group to offer enterprise-wide information resource

EAGAN, Minn., September 5, 2001 — Two leading businesses within The Thomson Corporation have joined forces to bring United Technologies a total information solution. Dialog and West Group, both leading providers of Web-based information and technology resources to the corporate market, today announced that they will provide United Technologies with a comprehensive legal, business and current awareness information solution.

The agreement brings West Group's principal online research services and tools to corporate legal departments at United Technologies headquarters and to corporate counsel at its subsidiaries Pratt & Whitney, Carrier, Otis, International Fuel Cells, and Hamilton Sundstrand and Sikorsky. The agreement also expands the presence of Dialog at United Technologies, most prominently at United Technologies Research Center, a business unit that teams with other company businesses to anticipate and fulfill customer demands.

"West Group has superior content and a reputation for best-in-industry customer service," said Chuck Catania, supply manager for United Technologies. "Their proposal to team with Dialog to provide a single resource for our global information and research needs makes excellent business sense and provides a remarkable library of online content."

In the legal department, United Technologies will now use West Group's flagship legal research service, Westlaw®, which will allow its users fast and easy access to an unmatched collection of some 15,000 databases of information, including editorially enhanced cases, statutes, rules and regulations; legal periodicals; texts; and business news from around the world. West Group also will provide a customized user interface configured to put critical information at the fingertips of United Technologies attorneys. All West Group services can be individually tailored by United Technologies users to fit their research needs.

With companies worldwide and more than half of its 2000 revenues coming from outside the United States, United Technologies needs reliable legal and business information gathered from across a global marketplace. Westlaw has the legal industry's broadest collection of content from U.S. courts and also features a growing body of legal information from countries around the world. Dialog hosts more than 6 billion pages of business, scientific, engineering and financial information, accessible via the Internet or through delivery to enterprise intranets.

"We were able to approach United Technologies information needs holistically," said Jim Colantino, senior vice president of U.S. Sales at Dialog. "Working together, West Group and Dialog offered a comprehensive package of research materials and online publications, as well as the tools to serve up a total information solution."

"United Technologies' industry-leading businesses, best-of-class brands and international presence make it an excellent match for the global content and customizable user interface of Westlaw," said Tim Erblich, national director of Corporate Markets for West Group. "And West Group and Dialog together will provide a true one-stop shop for all their global research needs, bring the broadest collection of information and technology tools to support strategic decision-making, and help all United Technologies businesses keep a competitive edge."
