Dialog Expands Its Graduate Education Programme

Company Also Set to Include Dialog Profound® & Dialog DataStar™ as Services In MLIS Instructional Programme

LONDON — 22July 2002 — Dialog, a Thomson (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC) business and a leading worldwide provider of online-based information services and integrated information solutions, announced today that it has expanded its Graduate Education Programme (GEP) to Europe and the Asia Pacific region.

Dialog's GEP is a professional development initiative designed to help future librarians prepare to use online information services as they take up their jobs in libraries, schools and businesses around the world. The programme offers graduate library schools access to Dialog services and specialised training materials.

The programme was rolled out January 2002 in the United States and Canada, and is now available to library schools in Europe and the Asia Pacific region. Interested library school administrators should contact Dialog via e-mail at .

"As a leading provider of services for information professionals worldwide, we have a stake in helping nurture tomorrow's users," said Libby Trudell, Dialog senior vice president of information professional market development. "As a global provider, it is appropriate that our Graduate Education Programme now be available in more countries."

The expansion of the GEP is the latest in a series of enhancements to the programme.

For example, the company in September 2002 will begin offering its Dialog DataStar™ and Dialog Profound® services for student training and practice as part of the GEP.

Dialog recently also added its Dialog Intranet Toolkit, a service that helps companies relay external information across their enterprise-wide information systems, to the GEP.

Blankson-Hemans noted that the addition of Dialog DataStar would be especially helpful for graduate library students preparing for careers in the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries.

"Dialog DataStar is known among information professionals as the world's leading source of content relevant in the pharmaceuticals and the biomedical arenas. The service is particularly well known in European markets," she said. "But until now library schools have not had the means to readily make Dialog DataStar available to students as part of an industry-specific training regime. The addition of Dialog DataStar to the GEP fills that gap."

Dialog first started providing free professional development services in 1976 and today sponsors a number of initiatives.

For example, Dialog also supports library and information science students through its Roger K. Summit Scholarship programme. Established in 1992 to honour information industry pioneer Dr. Roger Summit, the founder of Dialog, the scholarships are available to graduate students who have demonstrated keen interest in electronic information resources. In 2002, there will be three awards of $5,000 (approximately £3500) each to students in North America, Europe and the Asia Pacific region.
