Dialog Seeks Applicants for First of 2002's Summit Scholarships

CARY, NC, USA, January 28, 2002 -- The Dialog Corporation, a Thomson business and a leading worldwide provider of online-based information services, today announced that it is seeking applicants from North America for the first of its 2002 Roger K. Summit Scholarships.

The company said it will award a US$5,000 scholarship to a North American graduate student enrolled in an accredited library or information sciences program, with the presentation to be made at the Special Libraries Association annual conference to be held June 2002 in Los Angeles. Later in 2002, the company will be accepting applications for two additional scholarships for students attending programs in Europe and in Australia and New Zealand. (In 2003, the latter will be expanded to encompass the entire Asia Pacific region.)

The deadline for North American applicants is April 30, 2002.

"An important aspect of our scholarship program is to make students aware of the breadth of possibilities in the library profession," said Libby Trudell, Dialog senior vice president of information professional market development. "The Summit Scholarships benefit the winners financially of course, but they also help to draw attention to the expanding mission of library schools around the world as they prepare future information professionals and librarians for careers in information centers and other business settings, as well as in libraries and schools."

The scholarship program is named for Roger K. Summit, the founder of The Dialog Corporation and a pioneer in developing online information technology who since 1997 has been the company's chairman emeritus.

Scholarship winners are selected by information professionals and educators based locally in each of the regions. Criteria include academic achievement, demonstrated interest in electronic information services, proficiency using Dialog's online services and products, and faculty recommendations.

Applications are available online at http://gep.dialog.com/scholarship

Dialog recently announced the launch of its Graduate Education Program (GEP) and the appointment of two librarian training specialists to serve North American graduate library schools as field training consultants. As part of the GEP, Dialog also established a learning alliance with the Association of Library and Information Science Educators (ALISE).

Details on the GEP may be found at: http://www.dialog.com/pressroom/2002/alise_010702.shtml
