Two Share 2003 Roger K. Summit Scholarship Prize from Dialog

LONDON (2 December 2003) — Dialog, a Thomson (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC) business and a leading worldwide provider of online-based information services and integrated information solutions, today announced joint winners of its 2003 Roger K. Summit Scholarship award for the Europe, Middle East and Africa region.

The two winners are Ms. Jessica Burgener and Ms. Frédérique Zwahlen, both students of library sciences at Haute Ecole de Gestion, Filière Information et Documentation, HES-SO (University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland), in Geneva, Switzerland. As the first joint recipients of a Summit Scholarship, the two will share the €5,000 award to help continue their education.

Dialog made the announcement during the Online Information 2003 conference, the world’s largest gathering of information industry professionals meeting in London this week.

The scholarship is in honour of Roger K. Summit, the founder and former chairman of Dialog, an early pioneer in the technology behind electronic information retrieval.

"This year’s candidates for our scholarship award were truly outstanding. We felt that because Jessica and Frédérique did their research together it is only fair to make a joint award for the region in 2003. Both have demonstrated tremendous achievements in their academic careers, and we can expect great things from them in the years ahead,” said Libby Trudell, Dialog senior vice president of information professional development.

Ms. Burgener previously studied at the Lycée Collège de la Planta in Sion, Switzerland, where she specialised in foreign languages. She has worked in London and in the Swiss city of Brig. Since enrolling at the University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland, she has been involved in projects for the archives of the city of Geneva, the Vatican Library and in research on the architect Frank Gehry.

Ms. Zwahlen previously studied economics before entering the Information and Documentation Department at the University of Applied Science of Western Switzerland in 2001. In addition to her ongoing studies, she also has worked in the Bibliomedia Suisse in Lausanne and currently works at the Resource Information Centre at her university’s undergraduate programme.
