Info Industry Founder Roger K. Summit to Attend Sydney Show

Dialog to Focus on Alerts, News, Linking, Business Information & Intellectual Property Content & Products at Conference

Company Extends Its "Graduate Education Programme" to Australia, New Zealand

SYDNEY, NSW (17 January, 2003) — Dialog, a Thomson (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC) business and a leading worldwide provider of online-based information services and integrated information solutions, will spotlight an array of new and enhanced products and content at the 11th Information Online Conference and Exhibition, Australia's premier information industry conference that begins here on 21 January.

Dialog also said that Dr. Roger K. Summit, the founder of Dialog, will attend the conference, in part to present the first Roger K. Summit Scholarship awarded to an Australian recipient. Summit, who remains chairman emeritus of Dialog, is widely known as the pioneer of the technology behind electronic information retrieval, which made possible today's global information industry.

(Editors: Dr. Summit is available for interviews prior to and during the conference. Please contact Meagen Benson, Spectrum Communications, in Sydney at 02-9954-3299.)

Dialog also said that it has extended its Graduate Education Programme — a series of training initiatives for graduate-level students at library schools — to Australia and New Zealand. That will enable library schools in the two countries to access Dialog online services without charge as part of their curricula. Dialog's programme is designed to help future librarians prepare to use online information services as they take up their jobs in libraries, schools and businesses. The programme was introduced in North America and Europe last year.

"We are excited to be participating again in this prestigious information industry event in Sydney. We've enjoyed a long-standing leadership position among Australian and New Zealand information professionals. Both countries remain important markets for us," said Stuart Doig, Dialog vice president for the Asia Pacific region. "We will showcase a number of exciting new products and enhancements at the show. And of course we're honoured to be hosting Roger Summit, the man who started it all."

Among the new and enhanced products and services Dialog will highlight are:

  • Dialog® NewsRoom — a unified database of more than 7,000 news sources drawn from nearly 80 countries, including hundreds from Australia and New Zealand — that features built-in Alerting features.

  • Dialog's soon-to-be launched customized corporate portals service that will enable enterprises to integrate content and information services into their business processes.

  • Brokerage and other investment-oriented information supplied by Intelligence Data, which recently became part of Dialog. The Intelligence Data product line includes IntraScope, InSite and Intelliscope.

  • Extensive additions to Dialog's already formidable collection of scientific, technical and medical information, such as patent, trademark and similar data.

  • A database of Internet domain names, with about 65 million records covering about 20 million currently active plus historic domain names, all searchable by more than 50 indexed data fields.

  • Seamless linking from citations of articles published in scholarly and professional journals focused on chemical industry topics to the full abstracts of those documents, a new service that adds value to the more than17 million chemical citations available through Dialog. (Dialog is a leader in e-journal linking.)

  • Ongoing additions of business information services to various files and databases available through Dialog services.

Additionally, Dialog will host:

  • Presentation of the first Roger K. Summit Scholarship awarded to an Australian recipient for excellence in the field of electronic information (conference banquet, 22 Jan.).

  • Awarding of Dialog's Quantum2 InfoStar Awards to winners from Australia and New Zealand. As part of its Quantum2 program offering professional education and career development services to information professionals worldwide, Dialog designates individuals whose creativity and innovation are inspirational to others in the information field.

Dialog will exhibit at stand/booth 107/108.
