Dialog Designates Information Professionals From Australia & Singapore as InfoStars

SYDNEY (28 June 2004) — Dialog, a Thomson (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC) business and a leading worldwide provider of online-based information services and integrated information solutions, today said that two information specialists — one from Australia and the other from Singapore — are the winners of its 2004 Quantum2 InfoStars Awards for the Asia Pacific region.

This year’s winners are Christine Herrmann of the Australian National Audit Office (Canberra) and Ann Lim of the Defence Science & Technology Agency (Singapore).

As part of its Quantum2 programme offering leadership development training to information professionals worldwide, Dialog annually recognises a select group in different regions as InfoStars. The awards are given to individuals whose creativity and innovation are inspirational to others in the information field.

“We’re delighted to honour these two outstanding individuals from Australia and Singapore,” said Libby Trudell, Dialog senior vice president of information professional development, based in the United States. “Both of them embody the leadership qualities that are so vital to today’s information professional. They are proactive in reaching out to others within their organisations. We’re pleased to be able to shine a spotlight on them now so that others may learn from their achievements.”

Trudell added that Christine Herrmann is being honoured in part for her success in developing an online current awareness system for the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO).

Said Trudell: “Christine played a key role in moving ANAO from news access via hardcopy to access through an intranet delivery platform. She was thorough in the two-year project, working closely with different departments to make sure that the new process met the needs of her colleagues throughout the organisation.”

Herrmann currently serves as a research librarian and co-manager of ANAO’s Information Research Centre. Before joining the government agency in 1994, she worked at the Supreme Court of Victoria Library (Melbourne), Telecom Australia (Clayton, Victoria) and the National Library of Australia (Canberra). Herrmann holds both a master of arts in librarianship and a bachelor of science with honours from Monash University, and has also completed additional graduate work at Monash.

Ann Kwee Lang Lim is the manager of the Information Resource Centre (IRC) at the Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA), a statutory board under Singapore’s Ministry of Defence. She is recognised as an InfoStar for her strong relationship management skills with other support departments in her organisation and the information management community within the military, noted Trudell.

“Ann’s collaborative skills help the DSTA monitor global events and technological developments worldwide that impact military preparedness. And it helps the Agency make smart decisions when it comes to purchasing library and information-sharing technology. The Agency is utilising information as a strategic resource, and that requires the type of cross-department teamwork that Ann helps foster.”

Trudell added that Lim was a member of a task force that improved the management of the library resources in the Singapore military, adopting strategies that included setting up an Information Knowledge Asset Depository to promote information resource sharing.

In addition to research, Lim’s other responsibilities include strategic goal setting, budgeting and managing ties with vendors both in Singapore and internationally. The Information Resource Centre, through her leadership, has won awards in the Singapore National Quality Competitions.

Lim holds a master of science (Information Studies) from Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) and a bachelor of economics from the University of Newcastle in Australia.
