Derwent World Patents Index Extends Content Set and Improves Functionality

Enhanced Version Now Available on Dialog

CARY, NC, USA, July 25, 2006 — Thomson Scientific, an operating unit of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC) and leading provider of information and technology solutions to the worldwide scientific community, today announced that Dialog has released the enhanced version of Derwent World Patents Index® (DWPISM). DWPI (Files 350, 351, 352 on Dialog), a comprehensive database of value-added patent information, now features a more robust content set and improved database functionality.

“The improved DWPI database provides Dialog patent searchers additional value-added content with enhanced database performance and stability to make finding patent information easier than ever.” said Viji Krishnan, Dialog vice president of publisher management. “And the new display enhancements make data in DWPI easier to read when viewed in Dialog interfaces supporting HTML.”

Enhancements to DWPI include:

  1. New Content
    • New, original patent data, including the original patent titles and abstracts; original patent titles are available in multiple languages
    • Extra bibliographic data, such as full inventor names and associated addresses, patent assignee addresses and patent agent information
    • 750,000 documentation abstracts in text-searchable format available for the first time; original abstracts are available in multiple languages
    • Multiple drawing and chemical structure images display, in addition to a representative drawing, in-line with the relevant text

  2. Improved Indexing
    • International Patent Classification Reform (version 8)
    • Original US classification assigned by the USPTO available in DWPI for the first time
    • New Basic Index and Limit qualifiers streamline searching

  3. Better Display Options
    • Data presented in table format, such as patent families and patent filing details can be easily cut and pasted into spreadsheet and word processing software.
    • New predefined formats and display codes permit viewing just the data of interest
    • Data displays in HTML format in DialogLink 5 and Web interfaces
    • Text sizes automatically adjust to size of window and special characters, such as superscripts and subscripts, are supported

The improved DWPI database also accommodates the requirements of the International Patent Classification (IPC) version 8, which entered into force January 1, 2006. A comprehensive list of enhancements, including a sample record, is available at www.dialog.com/dwpi.
