Dialog Study Reveals Key Players in Solar Energy Market Suntech comes on strong in trademark filings; Greenvolts and Sempra emerge November 9, 2009 ( Morrisville, North Carolina) — New research from Dialog, a leader in online information services for professional searchers, identifies companies poised to play leading roles in solar energy technology. Dialog analyzed trademark activity for photovoltaic solar panels over the course of five years to determine which companies had the most active and sustained programs. The research comes on the heels of Tempe-based First Solar’s announcement of its agreement with the Chinese government to build a 2 gigawatt solar power plant in Ordos City, Inner Mongolia, China. The trends in Dialog’s research suggest Chinese manufacturer Wuxi Suntech Power Company may be another key player in solar energy for the next several years and also identified two emerging companies —GreenVolts, Inc. and Sempra Energy. The research is published in Dialog’s e-Newsletter Eye on Innovation. “In light of the widespread discussion of climate change of recent years, and helped by government tax credits offered in some countries, there has been an increased popular awareness of solar technology,” said Suzanne BeDell, Dialog General Manager. “We paired content in TrademarkScan with Dialog search tools to determine which new and established companies are increasing their research and accelerating their investment in this area.” Dialog’s research focused on “intent to use" trademark filings. These applications identify upcoming use of brand names, logos or taglines for a new business, product launch or ad campaign. Dialog’s research reveals Wuxi Suntech filed nine applications in the last year. Daystar Technologies of Santa Clara, California, is the leader in cumulative applications, with 14 marks filed in the past five years. Its trademark activity declined in 2008. San Francisco-based GreenVolts, Inc. and Michigan-based Sempra Energy each filed four marks in 2008, their first in the area of photovoltaic solar panels. “Dialog databases and search tools enable information professionals to gather competitive intelligence, expand knowledge of potential product niches and show who’s doing what in the market,” said Lynn Christie, Dialog VP of Product Management. “This is action-oriented data.” To see the complete list of companies most active in solar energy visit dialog.com to read the article in Eye on Innovation.
