Dialog Names U-T's Andrea Baer 2010 RKS Scholarship Winner

June 13, 2010 (New Orleans) — Dialog, a leader in online information services for professional searchers, awarded the 2010 Roger K. Summit Scholarship for North America to Andrea Baer, a student in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Tennessee. The scholarship is named in honor of Dialog founder Roger K. Summit, a pioneer in developing the technology behind online information retrieval.

"Andrea is a truly exceptional student," said Libby Trudell, vice president, market development. "She's academically gifted, but we were most impressed with her vision of the future. She envisions a continually evolving role for information professionals as their skills and insights enable more effective knowledge sharing across all layers of society."

Ms. Baer feels that the digital age's abundant electronic information resources and services enrich human potential to learn from others both in local communities and globally. "In my involvement in information literacy instruction, as well as in my research on technology-integrated collaborative learning and learning spaces, I seek to help students develop the skills they need to act as informed and engaged citizens of the world," she said.

Ms. Baer is a student, an accomplished researcher — holding a doctorate in comparative literature from the University of Washington — and an instructor at University of Tennessee.

"Andrea is a dream student — smart, hardworking, reliable, and attentive to details," said Margaret Casado, Research Services Librarian and a member of University of Tennessee's adjunct faculty in the School of Information Sciences. "She shows great promise for exceptional contributions to the world of Information Sciences."

The Roger K. Summit Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate student enrolled in an accredited library or information sciences program. Scholarship winners must demonstrate proficiency in using Dialog® services, academic achievement, and interest in the field of electronic information services.
