Csiro's Girke Is 2010 Winner of SLA Australia & New Zealand Chapter Information Pro Award

Winner is honored at SLA Conference

June 14, 2010 (New Orleans) — Dialog, a leader in online information services for professional searchers, announced that Thomas Girke, Manager, Information Support, Library Services, at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), is the winner of the 2010 Information Professional of the Year by the Special Libraries Association (SLA) Australia and New Zealand Chapter. The announcement was made during the SLA 2010 conference in New Orleans. Mr. Girke receives a cash prize from Dialog of AUD$2,000.

Mr. Girke was selected by unanimous decision of the judging panel for his extraordinary initiative in updating the CSIRO Library technology systems and in enhancing the research facilities for CSIRO staff. Mr. Girke launched the initiative to support CSIRO's new brand of "Big science for challenging times." His work enables a strengthened role for CSIRO as a leading national research organisation. The judging panel also noted Mr. Girke's commitment to the profession overall, as exemplified by his promotion of the use of information technologies within the library community and his professional association committee work.

"Thomas is a role model for the entire profession," said Liz Blankson-Hemans, Dialog's Director, Market Development, International. "He's committed and understands how the library not only helps propel the work of an organization, but also plays a role in its evolution. It's an honor to present him with this year's award."

Dialog has sponsored the SLA Australia and New Zealand Chapter Information Professional of the Year Award since 2004. It's part of the company's larger, time-honored program of awards and honors for information professionals. The award is open to information professionals, such as public, corporate and government librarians, independent information consultants, knowledge managers and others, working and living in Australia or New Zealand. A panel of SLA Australia and New Zealand board members and Dialog representatives determine the winner.
