Dialog Launches All-New Search Service

The ProQuest Dialog™ service answers long-standing dream of professional searchers for simplified access and unified Dialog® and DataStar®

August 24, 2010 (MORRISVILLE, NC)—Dialog, a leader in online information services for professional searchers, launched the first release of the ProQuest Dialog™ service, an important milestone toward unifying Dialog® and DataStar® while simplifying access and searching of their breadth of content. The move emphasizes ProQuest’s continuing investment in reinventing the acclaimed brand. ProQuest Dialog offers an intuitive search interface for end users, combined with a new approach to precision search based on relevancy, transparency, control and completeness — traits sought by professional searchers.

“This development effort was research-based and customer-focused,” said Julie Janusz, ProQuest Vice-President of Technology and Dialog interim General Manager. “As a result, we’re able to deliver a truly transformative user experience by combining authoritative content with a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use interface.”

The service was developed over nearly 18 months of research and testing with users — from professional searchers to corporate end-users. Detailed personas, in addition to live testing, enabled developers to consistently iterate to the ideal, user-centered interface and tool set. “Our prime directive was to improve ease of use without sacrificing search precision,” said Lynn Christie, Dialog VP of Product Management. “Feedback from both end users and information professionals indicates that we have achieved that goal.”

The first release of ProQuest Dialog is intended for pharmaceutical and biomedical researchers in corporate and government organizations. It offers subscription-based access to databases from some of the world’s most trusted publishers , such as Embase®, BIOSIS Previews®, MEDLINE®, SciSearch®, Adis Reactions, and IMS R&D Focus. Automatic text translation of search results, left-hand truncation, iterative filtering and date histograms are among the advanced features that enhance search.

ProQuest Dialog is built on the same technology infrastructure as the new ProQuest platform and has been developed in tandem. As millions of records were loaded, the companies normalized indexing to improve ease of use for cross-database searching that will enable ProQuest content to be used more easily by traditional Dialog users.

The next major release, scheduled for late 2010, will add more scientific, technical and medical content to meet the needs of scientists and engineers in a wide range of R&D-driven organizations. Additional releases will follow in 2011 to round out the entire collection of intellectual property and business intelligence content now available on Dialog, as well as continuously enhancing functionality.
