ProQuest Names Elliott Hauser 2012 Summit Scholarship Winner

Scholarship named for Dialog founder Roger Summit aims to fill information profession

July 16, 2012 (Ann Arbor, MI) — ProQuest, an information firm central to global research, has awarded the 2012 Roger K. Summit Scholarship to Elliott Hauser, a Ph.D. student studying information science at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. The scholarship — named in honor of Dialog founder Roger K. Summit, a pioneer in developing online information retrieval services — was presented at the Special Libraries Association's annual conference in Chicago.

Mr. Hauser's research centers on the problem of data description — accounting for the sources, transformations, and analyses that data have undergone during the research process. In the summer of 2012, he is completing a Google-funded "Summer of Code" project in evolutionary informatics, which is also sponsored by the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in Durham. This open source project will support the implementation of a minimum informatics standard for phylogenetics data.

"Elliott's research has the potential to change the way the information services such as ProQuest can support serious researchers and their quests for new knowledge," said Anthea Gotto, ProQuest Vice President, Global Training. Mr. Hauser received his M.S.I.S. in 2012 from UNC Chapel Hill, with a Certificate in Clinical Information Science. His undergraduate studies, majoring in Art History with a minor in Philosophy, were completed at Duke University in 2005, where he graduated with Highest Distinction.

The Roger K. Summit Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate student enrolled in an accredited library or information sciences program. Scholarship winners must demonstrate understanding of digital information services, academic achievement, and interest in the field of electronic information services. The Scholarship is part of ProQuest's Graduate Education Program for Library and Information Sciences. The GEP program encompasses the full range of ProQuest products, including Dialog and the new ProQuest research environment, and provides free access for classroom use by qualifying programs.
